great himalayan national park
the great himalayan national park (ghnp) is a unesco world heritage site spreading across the upper tirthan and sainj valleys, a short drive from jibhi. this is where the casual walking ends and proper himalayan trekking begins: deep forest, alpine meadows, and some of the best-protected biodiversity in the western himalaya.
the main entry points are at sai ropa and gushaini in the tirthan valley, both an easy drive from jibhi. day walks into the ecozone are doable without much planning. for anything deeper into the park you'll need a permit, and for the core zone, a guide.
multi-day routes like rolla, shilt and the rakhundi ridge start from here. they need permits, a guide and a few days. book through the ecodevelopment (ecodev) office at sai ropa or a registered local operator, and carry photo id.
how to reach it
drive to sai ropa or gushaini in the tirthan valley, roughly 30 to 45 minutes from jibhi depending on the entry point.
day vs multi-day
short ecozone walks are easy and need no guide. core-zone treks (rolla, shilt) need a permit, a guide, and two to five days.
permits
arranged at the ghnp / ecodev office at sai ropa, or through your homestay or a registered guide. carry photo id for everyone in the group.
best time
april to june and september to october. avoid peak monsoon (leeches, slippery trails) and deep winter, when the high routes are snowed in.
the same valley
the park sits in the tirthan valley, the same stretch of river known for its trout. a lot of people pair a day walk with a morning by the water.
