when to go to jibhi

jibhi is open all year, but every month is a different jibhi. the short answer: april-june and september-october are the easy picks. the longer answer is below.

early spring

good

march - mid april

10-20°C days, cold nights. occasional rain.

the valley is waking up. apple blossoms, mostly empty cafes, locals still in their winter rhythm.

good for: people who want jibhi without the crowd. great for working remotely.

watch out: jalori pass may still be snowbound till mid-april. check before booking a trek.

late spring

go

mid april - june

15-25°C days, pleasant nights.

peak season. clear skies, every cafe open, all the treks accessible. busy but not chaotic.

good for: first-time visitors, treks, families, swimming in the river.

watch out: book everything 6-8 weeks out. don't show up on a long weekend without a plan.

monsoon

tradeoff

july - august

12-22°C, heavy rain in spells. mist most days.

the valley is the greenest it ever gets. waterfalls are loud. cafes are quiet. the romantic version, and the muddy version.

good for: a particular kind of traveller: moody, slow, indoors-friendly.

watch out: landslides on the road in are real. budget extra time. don't plan tight schedules.

early autumn

go

september - october

12-22°C, clear days, crisp evenings.

our favourite season. the air is clean, the crowds are gone, the river is full and clear, the forests start turning gold.

good for: everything. honeymoons, solo trips, treks, writing weeks, photography.

watch out: nothing. just go.

late autumn

good

november

5-15°C, cold mornings.

leaves on the ground, smoke from kitchens, lights on in cafes by 5pm. the village starts to slow down for winter.

good for: people who like quiet and don't mind layers.

watch out: some treehouses shut down. fewer cafes open daily. check before you book.

winter

tradeoff

december - february

-2 to 10°C. snow possible, especially jan.

snowed-in jibhi is its own thing. fireplaces, hot bukharis, less to do outside.

good for: people who want snow without the manali traffic.

watch out: jalori pass closes. road can shut after heavy snow. most cafes run reduced hours. heating in stays matters a lot. ask first.

what to pack, by season

spring / autumn: light jumpers, a windproof shell, walking shoes, sunscreen.

summer: t-shirts but always a light jacket for evenings. mosquito repellent for the riverside.

monsoon: proper waterproof shoes (not floaters), a rain jacket, a quick-dry towel. expect mud everywhere.

winter: thermals, gloves, a heavy down jacket, a beanie. and a kindle.
