chehni kothi
chehni kothi is a tall stone-and-timber tower in a tiny village above the tirthan valley, built in the traditional kathkuni style: interlocking wood and stone, no cement. it's centuries old, it survived the 1905 kangra earthquake that took off its upper floors, and it still leans quietly over the village like it has always been there.
to reach it you drive about 30 minutes from jibhi, then walk 20 to 25 minutes uphill through the village. the path passes slate-roofed houses and terraced fields, and then the tower just appears, much bigger up close than you expect.
there's almost never a crowd. it's one of those places still standing because nobody decided it was worth tearing down, and it's all the better for it. just remember it sits in a living village, not a museum.
how to reach it
about 30 minutes by car from jibhi to the trailhead near chehni/shenshar, then a 20 to 25 minute walk uphill. a taxi there and back is easy to arrange through your stay.
time needed
half a day with travel. the walk is short but steadily uphill, so go at a steady pace and carry water.
best time
spring through autumn. the path can get slick in monsoon. morning light is the kindest for photos and the village is quietest then.
a small ask
people still live here. keep noise down, ask before photographing homes, and don't climb on the structure. it has stood for centuries partly because people leave it alone.
while you're out
chehni kothi pairs well with a slow morning in jibhi village and a cafe afterwards. it's history without the crowds, which is the whole point of coming here.
